LIVING LOVLIER

Lovelier Living

Love where you live

Decorating makes me happy. I love sharing my passion for making things lovely with others. I don’t have a degree in design, but who needs one if you just want to have fun? I don’t tear down walls, or renovate kitchens and bathrooms. I suggest color, and paper, texture and and whimsy to personalize homes. What do you have, and how can we add simple touches to make your space even more fun and unique?

How about mixing a cheetah print fabric for your dining room chairs, with a sisal rug, and gold patterned wallpaper? Tie it all together with a fabulous chandelier.

I am just gettin’ started. Let’s go!

Bring nature inside

Bring Nature Indoors in the Dreary Months

The dreary winter weather can have us feeling uninspired and bored with the same walls around us. While I have this sweet asparagus fern on my table, I wanted to bring a bit more of nature into the house to brighten things up and add some life to the kitchen.

So, when I did my weekly grocery shopping yesterday, I picked up a few basics such as apples for the horses, and garlic which is a staple in my kitchen, (of course). While in the produce section, I saw this sweet little rosemary plant which reminded me of the one I planted in my herb garden last summer. Into the cart it went. I picked up a simple bunch of white chrysanthemums, too.

As I unpacked the grocery bags, I pulled out a wooden salad bowl for the apples, and an old Bell jar for my mums. I looked and looked for a decorative pot for my rosemary to no avail, so I pulled a saucer from the cabinet, and placed the plant on top which worked just fine. Things don’t have to be perfect to be lovely, by the way. I placed everything on the cutting boards which I keep handy on my table.

Keep it simple. Make it Lovely

Here is a bit about Chrysanthemums (or, Mums). These are hearty, and long-lasting flowers which are simple and elegant. (I suggest a monochromatic bunch. I personally do not care for a bunch of multicolored mums, but that is just my personal preference).

To ensure that your flowers (any type) stay fresh, change the water daily, and add a little drop or two of bleach (I am not kidding). The reason fresh flowers pass quickly is because bacteria grows in the water. Bleach kills that bacteria, not the flowers. Be sure to trim the stems every day or so. A fresh cut allows the stem to take up the fresh water.

Our Tonka Truck

My Michael and I drove to finalize the purchase our Palomino Quarter Horse, George. George’s owner is a lover of horses, and a lover (and breeder) of Labrador Retrievers.

On our drive to pay for George, I mentioned her labs and commented on the operation. I happened to mention the price of a puppy. My Michael commented that he would NEVER pay ($$$$) for a Labrador puppy.

As I completed the transaction for George, My Michael took to one yellow lab puppy in particular and played with him for a while.

Once we finished business, we departed and stopped to have lunch on our way home. My Michael returned from washing his hands, sat at the table and announced, “I think we should buy that puppy”. My thought was, “Don’t tempt me with a puppy”!

So, that is how Tonka joined our family. And this is why we refer to him as our “point of sale purchase’. Buy a horse and just pick up a puppy as you cash out.

You are Welcome

Entertaining can be enjoyable for many, but for others, it can be daunting. Hosting requires work and energy. A host does not simply open the door and say “Welcome”. There is so much to prepare before your guests arrive. It is great to have a clean house, food in the fridge, and a guest room that evokes, “YAY! You’re here”!

The guest room is a home-away-from-home, and is best prepared to make your company feel welcome, comfortable, and relaxed.

Here are a few tips to make your guest’s room special.

  • Fresh flowers

  • Clean, Crisp and Ironed sheets

  • Fluffy towels (Bath, Hand and Facecloth)

  • Bottled water and.a few snacks such as crackers or granola bars

  • Extra blankets

  • Note the internet login

  • Leave a pen and paper handy

What else can make the room feel more special? Personalize it! Find a photo of a fun time spent with your guests, frame it, and put it on display in their room.

Your guests will be grateful and most welcomed.

Have a wonderful visit.
